Strawberry Field Will Not Become 3rd Disneyland Theme Park – At Least For Now

Disney went before the Anaheim Planning Commission last week in order to pitch a plan to build an additional parking structure on land that they purchased eleven years ago. The site which used to be a strawberry field and located at 1946 S. Harbor Blvd., was purchased by Disney for a possible third theme park. The commission approved Disney’s plan today.

The main reason Disney needs the extra parking space right now is due to the fact that they recently closed the 2,226-space Timon parking lot which was the last piece of the original Disneyland parking lot. This is where the new Cars Land is being developed as part of the $1 billion expansion taking place right now in Disney’s California Adventure.

Disney can use the extra parking spaces for at least six years. However Anaheim wants to reserve space on the 53-acre Disney property for a fixed-guideway system (like a monorail) between a planned transportation hub and the tourist area. If the guideway isn’t ready after six years, Disney could keep the temporary parking lot for an additional four years.

“This approval will help us manage the transportation needs of our guests as we continue to grow and invest in Anaheim,” said Disney spokesman John Nicoletti.

The fact that Disney will now build a parking garage on this property does not rule out a possible third theme park in the future – it only delays it. And to no surprise to me seeing that Disney Imagineers seem to be putting all their efforts into completing the California Adventure expansion by 2012.

The new parking structure of built according to plans submitted to the commission will add 2,570 additional parking spaces to the 28,893 they already have.

Winner of “My Favorite Disney Parks Memory” Contest Announced

In July I wrote about Disney’s new channel on YouTube and a contest that was being held at the time where participants where encouraged to share their most cherished Disney Parks memories with other Disney fans around the world. The winner would enjoy an all expense paid vacation to The Disneyland Resort which includes a stay in the exclusive, new Disneyland Dream Suite.

The contest is now over and a winner has been announced. It’s Nate Silverman and his video of his favorite “Disney Parks memory” includes a very cute child. Nate and his family will receive a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Disneyland Resort, including a night in the Disneyland Dream Suite, airfare, 2-day Theme Park passes and ground transportation for a family of 4. All other finalists will receive an Annual Pass to the Disney Park of their choice.

This wasn’t my favorite I must admit but it is awful cute nevertheless. Congratulations to the Silverman family.

Not a Good Time To Visit Disneyland Resort, Unless You Like Construction

It is officially the refurbishment season for the Disneyland resort. And while it’s a great time to visit the park to avoid large crowds, be ready to see a lot of construction in the process. If you don’t mind construction walls up everywhere and not being able to enjoy some of your favorite attractions, you will most certainly enjoy shorter waits (if any wait at all) for more popular attractions, not to mention the cooler weather.

So, guests are encourage to check the Disneyland Resort web site prior to their visit to view current refurbishment and attraction closures schedule. If you visit the resort this week, this is what you can expect to see.

Disneyland

“it’s a small world” – closed for a nine-month refurbishment, and is currently scheduled to reopen on Saturday November 29, 2008. The nearby Toy Shop is also closed during the renovation.

New Century Timepieces – closed through the first week of October for conversion into the Fortuosity Shoppe.

French Market – closed September 2 to 19 for refurbishment.

Conostoga Wagon – closes September 2 for conversion from a McDonald’s french fry outlet into an unspecified food service location.

Harbour Galley – closes through December 16 for conversion from a McDonald’s French fry outlet into an unspecified food service location.

Haunted Mansion – closed September 2 to 25 to install the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay.

Sailing Ship Columbia – close September 2 to October 24 for refurbishment.

Big Thunder Ranch – closed September 15-25 install the Halloween overlay.

The Vineyard Room – closes September 29. No announcement has been made about a potential replacement for this restaurant.
