Captain EOEvery since Disney Parks first announced the return of “Captain EO,” the 3-D film starring Michael Jackson and directed by Francis Ford Coppola that was shown at Disney theme parks in the 1980s and 1990s, there has been an incredible response from fans with many wondering exactly when the classic attraction would reopen.

Well wait no longer as “Captain EO” is scheduled to re-open tomorrow, February 23 at Tomorrowland’s Magic Eye Theater.

The Disney Parks blog noted that while it’s not possible to replicate some special effects elements from the original presentation, it will boast a new 70mm print of the film and will sound better than ever thanks to acoustic enhancements made to the theater since the film last played there in 1997.

There was no mention as to how long the film would run but I have to assume that it will run at least as long as they need to hopefully put together something else to replace “Honey I Shrunk the Audience” which has been running there since 1998 (after Captain EO was shut down).

“Honey I Shrunk the Audience” showed its last performance at midnight on January 4, 2010, to make way for the return of Captain EO. Whether “Honey I Shrunk the Audience” will return after its hiatus or something new is on the block is still uncertain. I for one certainly hope that Disney will put forth some effort to add a new 3-D film or possibly even a 4-D film as they have done with “Muppet Vision 3-D” and “It’s Tough to Be a Bug!” in the adjacent California Adventure park.
